NOTES: North of Gunnison and south of Almont, the Gunison River offers exciting fly fishing opportunities. The Gunnison River is formed by the confluence of the East River and the Taylor River at the town of Almont. While you will find many fisherman always staking out the confluence due to easy roadside access, most of the action happens downstream. This river was designed to be floated, and you will find very few waders. There is a put-in right at the confluence, though many fly fisherman put in closer to Gunnison at the main put-in area 2 miles north of town. Along the river, you will find plenty of deep pools and long riffles. In addition to the typical rainbow trout and brown trout, there are stocked Kokanee Salmon from the Roaring Judy Hatchery upstream.
The best hatch season is in June and July, though you will find plenty of fly fishermen out there all year round when it is not iced over!
