REGION: Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest TITLE: Big Hole River
NOTES: Southwest of Butte near Melrose, the Big Hole River has a famous salmonfly hatch that is extraordinary for brown trout fishing. You can expect to find trophy-class rainbow trout and brown trout.
The Big Hole River starts near Wisdom and runs over 100 miles to the confluence with the Beaverhead River near Twin Bridges.
The best section to explore is from Wise River (town) to Divide. The confluence with the Wise River changes the river into an excellent fly fishery for brown trout and rainbow trout. River access is provided by SR43. There are plenty of pools and pockets as the River cascades through the canyon over boulders.
If youre really looking for big brown trout, make sure to check out the river below the town of Divide.
do not miss the golden stonefly hatch in June.
