Near Helen, the Dukes Creek is a popular area for rainbow trout and brown trout. The upper 7 miles of the creek are within the State of Georgia Smithgall Woods-Dukes Creek Conservation Area (5,560 acres), which is a catch-and-release zone. It is well-known for its trophy trout; there had been stocking in the past, but all trout are wild now.

Overall, Dukes Creek is the 3rd most popular fly fishing river of all 12 fly fishing spots in Georgia. Several of the better fly fishing rivers are nearby Dukes Creek including Upper Chattahoochee River and Dicks Creek.
