Near Bloomington, the North Branch Potomac River has excellent tailwater fly fishing for cutthroat trout and brown trout. This river is ideal for a float through this deep forested valley. The tailwater fishery is considered the lower river below Jennings Randoulph Lake (its catch and release just below the dam). This is the most popular section that most fly fishermen talk about. There is also an upper North Branch Potomac River section above the lake that is a freestone stream passing through scenic, remote country. This upper section is catch and release from June through September, and is stocked by the state.
Overall, North Branch Potomac River is the 2nd most popular fly fishing river of all 5 fly fishing spots in Maryland.
