Northwest of Poughkeepsie near Woodbourne in the Catskills, the Neversink River offers amazing dry fly fishing across both its sections. The Neversink River is formed from the confluence of the East and West branches near Claryville. The 19 mile upper stretch of the Neversink River is freestone above the Neversink Reservoir and stretches to its headwaters in the Catskill Preserve. Most of this stretch is private, although there is a small public stretch just above Denning on the East Branch of the Neversink River. The upper section is known for its brook trout and rainbow trout. The lower tailwater section is below the Neversink reservoir and runs all the way down to the Delaware River. There is plenty of good access to the long pools with slow flow over the riffles. In this popular tailwater fishery, you can expect to find rainbow trout, brown trout, and brook trout.
The best Neversink River fly fishing can be found in the Spring during the main hatches of midges, blue-winged olives and stoneflies. In early summer, it is best to explore the upper freestone river sections. And, then in late summer, move down to the tailwater section. Overall, you find that most of the trout is stocked by the state.
