Southwest of Lorain and northwest of Amherst, the Vermilion River is popular with fly fisherman for steelhead trout. There are eight primary public access points: Vermillion River Municipal Boat Ramp, Jerusalem Road access, Bacon Woods, Mill Hollow, Peasley Road access, Gore Orphanage Road access, Schoepfle Garden, and Wakeman Dam.

One of the better sections for fly fishing on the Vermilion River is the lower section leading to the Lake Erie confluence.

Overall, Vermilion River is the 6th most popular fly fishing river of all 12 fly fishing spots in Ohio.
