Near Buttzville in northwestern New Jersey, the Pequest River is well-known for its large trout, typically 12 to 14 inches long.
Between Great Meadows and Buttzville, there is a hatchery which gets really crowded and there is a Seasonal Trout Conservation Area in this region with special regulations. The better section to explore is from Buttzville to Belvidere (just before the confluence with the Delaware River).
The best fly fishing access to the Pequest River is provided by SR46 which runs parallel to the river.
Overall, Pequest River is the 4th most popular fly fishing river of all 10 fly fishing spots in New Jersey.
