Northwest of Charlotte near Boone, the Watauga River is known for its wild trout fly fishing opportunties. The Watauga River starts up on Grandfather Mountain and runs downstream to the Watauga Lake confluence.

The best section for fly fishing the Watauga River is in Boone behind the Foscoe Fishing Company, the Shulls Mill Road access and the Valle Crucius Park access via SR105.

Overall, Watauga River is the 17th most popular fly fishing river of all 19 fly fishing spots in North Carolina.
