North of Syracuse and west of Fulton, the Sterling Creek is becoming more popular with fly fishermen. The creek flow from the town of Sterling northwest into Lake Ontario north of Fair Haven. The river is known for its Fall and Winter runs of steelhead, lake brown trout and salmon.

Overall, Sterling Creek is the 18th most popular fly fishing river of all 32 fly fishing spots in New York. Several of the better fly fishing rivers are nearby Sterling Creek including Oswego River, Salmon River and Chenango River.
