Southwest of Casper, the Freemont Canyon section of the North Platte River is a very productive tailwater fishery. The North Platte River follows a 150 mile winding route through canyons and valleys. In the North Platte River, you can expect to find large brown trout and rainbow trout, plus there are some cuthroat trout. These fish can be difficult to catch and there are plenty of obstacles in the canyon.
The Cardwell Access Area is the most popular place to reach Freemont Canyon. It is a steep, but short descent into the canyon.
