Southwest of Casper and east of Alcova, the Grey Reef section of the North Platte River below Grey Reef Reservoir is a popular tailwater fly fishing zone due to easy access. The Grey Reef section is a 40 mile stretch from the dam down to Casper. The first 7 miles from the dam are the most famous. While wading is common, the best way to fish is by drift boat.
While there are year-round hatches on this section of river, the best caddis hatch is from June through September.
