Northeast of Sacremento, the American River is popular with fly fishermen. The lower section of the American River is a 25 mile stretch below Nimbus Dam downstream to Discovery Park near the Sacramento River confluence. The Nimbus Dam is located on Hazel Avenue just off US50.

Access for fly fishing the American River is easy via the American River Bike Trail which runs the entire length of the lower American River. If you want to float, there are several good boat ramps.

Note: The American River is closed from Ancil Hoffman Park to Nimbus Dam during November and December.

Overall, American River is the 12th most popular fly fishing river of all 17 fly fishing spots in California.
