West of Madison and Cross Plains, the Black Earth Creek is well known for its fly fishing of brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout. The Black Earth Creek starts as a spring west of Madison and runs to the Wisconsin River confluence. It is a Class 1 trout stream and is known for some prolific hatches.

The best section for fly fishing on the Black Earth Creek is downstream of South Valley Road where there is public access.
