In the Mpumalanga Province, the fly fishing in the Vaal River is popular for its smallmouth yellowfish. The Vaal River runs 700 miles from the headwaters in the Drakensberg Mountains downstream to the Orange River confluence near the town of Kimberley. Many fly fishermen consider the upper section through Highveld to be the best for chasing the smallmouth yellowfish.
Most fly fishermen fly into Johannesburg and then transfer to the town of Parys as the base.
