East of La Paz and northwest of Santa Cruz, the fly fishing on the Rio Asunta is popular for its Golden Dorado. The Rio Asunta is known as a freestrone river through a jungle-like environment. The Golden Dorado are typically about 6 pounds, but while fly fishing the Rio Asunta, you may find ones up to 30 pounds.
Most fly fishermen heading to the Rio Asunta tend to fly internationally into the city of Santa Cruz in order to avoid La Paz. The river is within the Parque Nacional Isiboro Secure.
While on adventure in Bolivia, it is important to keep in mind your own personal safety. Keep an eye out for pickpockets and be aware that it wouldn't be uncommon to have a theft in your room while you are sleeping. This is especially important since the passport/visa replacement process is complex, lengthy and costly.
Overall, Rio Asunta is the 2nd most popular fly fishing river of all 2 fly fishing spots in Bolivia.
